HEAD OF THE EXPERIMENTAL LABORATORY

The Experimental Archaeology Lab

The Laboratory of Experimental Archaeology is a research facility open to both researchers and the public, featuring a covered workshop and outdoor experimental reconstructions.

The Laboratory of Experimental Archaeology provides a research infrastructure as well as facilities for the conservation of the replicas it produces for scientific or educational purposes. It allows visitors to discover the scientific approach of experimental archaeology.

Research Programs

The LAE conducts research programs focusing primarily on architecture and animal traction in the Neolithic period, as well as hunting. It coordinates the full-scale construction of prehistoric dwelling structures in the Préhistomuseum’s archaeological park (Early Neolithic house, Middle Neolithic palisade, dolmen, etc.).

Infrastructure and experimental archaeology services

In addition to its own research programs, the LAE serves as a center of expertise that can respond to requests for collaboration from researchers and students in archaeology, who find here a platform for exchange, specialized expertise, and appropriate infrastructure.
It works closely with the Center for the Study of Techniques and Experimental Research in Prehistory (CETREP) of the Researchers of Wallonia [external link] and with the TracéoLab at the University of Liège [external link] on shared themes (hunting, projectiles, etc.).

A Facsimile Production and Conservation Service

The LAE produces facsimiles for the needs of the Préhistomuseum (educational activities, exhibitions) or upon request. It manages the facsimiles produced in accordance with CCED standards, ensuring their traceability (marking, inventory). It rigorously archives its products and experimental protocols to preserve and pass them on. It also ensures the conservation of the life-size reconstructions presented to the public.
