Support the Préhistomuseum in the Heritage Tombola

From 15 September to 15 November 2026, support the Préhistomuseum’s project and vote for the Engis Child!

What if a treasure discovered nearly 200 years ago in our region could now receive support to be preserved and better showcased?

The Préhistomuseum has been selected as one of the Walloon finalists of the Heritage Tombola, an initiative led by the National Lottery and its partners that allows the public to choose which heritage restoration projects they wish to support.

The finalist projects can receive funding of up to €150,000 for their restoration.

Why the Engis Child?

In 1829–1830, doctor and archaeologist Philippe-Charles Schmerling discovered several human remains in the Engis caves, in the province of Liège. Among them was the skull of a child, now known as the Engis Child.

This discovery was groundbreaking: the skull is now recognised as the first Neanderthal fossil ever discovered in the world.

Nearly 200 years later, the Engis Child still bears witness to a major discovery that has contributed to our understanding of human history. It is exceptional heritage, directly connected to our region, that we want to help preserve and pass on to future generations.

How can you support the project?

Now it’s your turn!

From 15 September to 15 November 2026, vote for the Préhistomuseum’s project dedicated to the Engis Child.

Vote now for the Engis Child

Every vote counts! But beyond the competition, your participation will above all help raise awareness of the story of the Engis Child and contribute to mobilising support for an exceptional part of our region’s heritage.

Let’s turn this nomination into a local movement for heritage that is part of world history.
